SUMMARY OF POSITION
Under the direct supervision of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for managing, supervising and directing the operation of the Agency in support of its organizational mission to provide family services and social justice initiatives to the community.
The Executive Director is responsible for the daily operation and administration of the agency. He/she has overall responsibility for all of the programs offered by the agency, including all operations and policies, procedures and regulatory requirements. The Executive Director is responsible for strategic and financial planning.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Executive Director of VCS has overall responsibility for the development, implementation, integration and evaluation of all program components in addition to the administration and evaluation of all human resources, fiscal and operational activities. Specific responsibilities include the following general categories and specific tasks.
Administration: The ED is responsible for the day-to-day operation of VCS to insure activities of the agency are accomplished efficiently and responsibly.
Attends all meetings of the Board and presents an ED's Report at each meeting
Attends all meetings of Board committees as schedule permits
Works closely with Membership Committee of the Board to make recommendations to the Board about new Board members
Orients Board members to the agency and their role in the life of the agency
Makes recommendations to the Board on the formulation of policy
Is responsible for the implementation of policy
Insures compliance with laws and regulations
Has public accountability
Undertakes legislative information activity-advocacy, lobbying, hearings, follow-up
Oversees plant operation and maintenance
Finance: VCS is a complex organization with many diverse funding sources and requires an ED with budget understanding and good/conservative fiscal management. The ED is skilled in:
Fiscal planning
Budget development and management
Budget monitoring and control
Fundraising - public appeals, special events
Grant-seeking (public and private)
Solicitation of grants and donations from individuals, foundations, etc.
Personnel: Staff and volunteers are a top priority in the effectiveness of VCS programs. The ED is able to lead and work with diverse and creative staff and volunteers. The ED is skilled in:
Recruitment, retention and motivation of staff
Oversight of recruitment, retention, and motivation of over 200 volunteers
Development of staff/volunteers
Organization of staff/volunteers
Development of job descriptions
Evaluation of staff
Development of personnel policy
Termination of employees/volunteers
Community Relations: As a community-based agency, it is important that the ED participates in local coalitions, builds relationships with other providers, etc. The ED is able to:
Develop government, community and agency relationships
Network with other agencies to provide opportunities for collaboration
Participate in meetings, workshops, advisory groups, task forces, etc. with other community and governmental agencies and alliances
Program Development: The ED ensures that programs are developed to respond to the issues and needs of the community and are consistent with the mission and values of the agency. The ED has expertise in:
Evaluating existing programs
Establishing program priorities if necessary
Phasing out services no longer required
Defining target populations
Assessing service needs of community
Planning and developing program objectives designed to meet service needs
Developing income-generating programs whenever and wherever possible
Insuring responsive, high quality and “user-friendly” service to our clients
Public Relations: The ED is able to utilize media to inform the public and to promote the agency, especially by:
Interpreting VCS's goals and services to the various publics-Board, staff, contributors, clients, legislators, etc.
Preparing an Annual Report
Developing program literature and marketing initiatives
Seeking speaking engagements to enhance the visibility of the organization
QUALIFICATIONS
The VCS Executive Director possesses:
A strong commitment to social justice through a willingness to learn about and embrace the anti-racist, social justice perspective of the agency,
including sex equality, LGBT equality, racial justice, etc.
A successful record of Executive Director experience or the equivalent with a history of accomplishment in the nonprofit, public and/or business sector
A Master's Degree in the field of Human Services, Public Administration or other related field
At least five years working in the field of social services with families, youth, children, etc.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal and public speaking skills, and experience working with diverse
populations and multiple constituencies
Experience in developing and evaluating program initiatives
A high degree of financial literacy and financial management experience
Ability to use Microsoft Office suite of software products and on-line social media applications
A strongly held sense of integrity and professional ethics
Reliable transportation and the ability to travel locally to various agency, community, industry and government-related meetings and functions
on a regular basis.

nonprofit agencies
